Abstract: Wind energy has made more inroads in renewable power generation due to environmental impact of conventional energy sources. The high penetration of grid connected wind energy has emerged as a recent trend in many countries. On the other hand, the problem of power generation loss due to the grid fault also arisen. The recent technological advancement suggests the importance of low voltage ride through (LVRT) in wind energy conversion system (WECS). However, LVRT is a technique in making uninterrupted connectivity of WECS in the presence of grid fault. This paper presents the state of the art of LVRT capabilities of various wind turbine generators using FACTS devices and different converter controllers. Also, the main challenging issues and different approaching strategies in LVRT are addressed. Finally, extracting all important features from distinct papers, new dimension of LVRT is presented for the power quality and power generation loss problems. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd
